DUNCAN, Oklahoma – The Federal Aviation Administration said a pilot died in a small plane crash near Duncan Wednesday.
FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the plane, described as a single-engine aircraft, went down and caught fire about 13 miles east of Duncan near the border between Stephens and Carter counties in southern Oklahoma.
Lunsford said law enforcement officials confirmed that the pilot was the Cessna 172's sole occupant. He said the plane was patrolling pipelines in the area, but he didn't know what company or individual the aircraft was registered to or where it departed.
The crash sparked a large grass fire that burned about 20 acres, according to SkyNews9 HD pilot Mason Dunn.
It is the second fatal plane crash in Oklahoma in a week. Another small airplane crashed in Yukon last Wednesday night, killing the pilot.
