OKLAHOMA CITY -- On January 27, 2001, News 9 lost esteemed friend and colleague, Sports Director Bill Teegins. Teegins was one of 10 members of the Oklahoma State University basketball team and staff on board a twin-engine Beech King Air 200 that crashed about 30 miles east of Denver during a light snow.
It was one of three small aircraft carrying the Oklahoma State University basketball team and staff after a game against the University of Colorado.
Teegins joined the News 9 team in 1987 after spending 15 years on air in Tulsa and Amarillo. For the next 13 years, Teegins was News 9's Sports Director and a friend everyone respected, always with a funny line and always with a smile.
Teegins covered the big events, including the University of Oklahoma's appearance in the 1988 NCAA Championship Game against Kansas, the Oklahoma State Cowboys' trip to the Final Four in 1995, and the Sooners' 2000 National Football Championship Game at the Orange Bowl.
Over the years Teegins hosted numerous coaches' shows with Billy Tubbs, Kelvin Sampson, Bob Stoops and Eddie Sutton.
And while basketball and football were Teegins' bread and butter, he enjoyed all sports. But the Minnesota native especially loved baseball. Teegins loved his Minnesota twins and loved to poke fun of it all.
But more than anything else at his job, Teegins loved doing play-by-play, delivering his signature calls, even on the day he died. He had the enthusiasm of a true lover of sport with the art of a true Oklahoma sports legend.
The other nine men lost in the crash were Denver Mills, Nate Fleming, Dan Lawson, Jared Weiberg, Pat Noyes, Will Hancock, Brian Luinstra, Kendall Durfey and Bjorn Fahlstrom.
