MANHATTAN, Kansas – Oklahoma running back Dominique Whaley broke his ankle Saturday and will miss the rest of the season.
Whaley suffered the injury on the Sooners' first play from scrimmage against Kansas State. He remained on the ground for an extended period of time before trainers put his leg in a cast and carted him off the field.
Stoops said Whaley will have a pin inserted into his ankle on Sunday.
Whaley has been one of the biggest stories of the season for the Sooners. He joined the team as a walk-on, and head coach Bob Stoops raved about him during the spring.
Whaley was somewhat surprisingly listed as the No. 1 running back in OU's first game of the season, beating out Roy Finch and Brennan Clay. He proved to be worthy of that privilege with four touchdowns in his first game, setting an OU walk-on record.
He missed last week's game against Texas Tech, which the Sooners lost to end a 39-game home winning streak. Despite missing that game, he entered Saturday leading the Sooners with 627 yards and nine touchdowns.
