Cassandra Allen and her three children left New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina hit seven years ago. Allen said Katrina destroyed everything they owned.
Allen and her children relocated to Perkins to be close to her older brother, Ruben Oliver. He played football at OSU with Barry Sanders in the late 1980s.
Allen said she still has family in New Orleans and is concerned about their well-being.
"I'm going to be watching the news. I'm going to be texting. I'm going to find out what's going on with my family," she said.
Allen said Perkins is now home. She said she went back to New Orleans three weeks ago. It rained the whole time she was there, and she couldn't wait to get back to Oklahoma.
Allen was a pre-kindergarten teacher in New Orleans, and has taught at schools in Coyle, Cushing and Stillwater since moving to Oklahoma. In 2011, she earned a Master's degree for teaching special needs, and now provides daycare out of her home.
