A McLoud Police Officer and the driver of a tow truck were both injured after a pair of apparent drunk driving accidents on Interstate 40, Thursday night.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene of the accident on I-40, at mile marker 178 near the Firelake Grand Casino, just before 8 p.m.

According to OHP, troopers were already working a drinking and driving wreck when the McLoud officer and tow truck driver arrived to assist. While conducting the first stop, a second drunk driver smashed into the McLoud officer's car and the tow truck.

The McLoud officer was taken to a hospital in Shawnee to be treated for a leg injury. The tow truck driver had to be taken to a hospital in Oklahoma City to be treated for a head injury. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

Two people were arrested at the scene. No other injuries have been reported.

The McLoud Police Department released the following statement regarding Thursday night's accident on I-40:

"Approximately 8:00 p.m. last night McCloud Police Officer John Burrows responded to I-40 mile marker 175 to assist with traffic control at an accident scene. As one of the wrecked vehicles was being removed from the scene by the wrecker, another vehicle slammed into the back of Burrows' patrol car forcing him to dive over the cable barrier, causing injury to one of his legs.

The suspect vehicle then swerved and hit the wrecker driver, throwing through the air and onto the ground. Two people inside the suspect vehicle were arrested on the scene by OHP troopers.

Alcohol was suspected as a cause of the crash. Officer Burrows was transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Shawnee with a leg injury. He was released late last night. The wrecker driver was transported to OU Medical Center. His condition is listed as serious but stable.

Officer Burrows is a reserve officer with the McLoud Police Department."
