Baby Veronica's Adoptive Parents Arrive In Oklahoma

The adoptive parents of an Oklahoma girl at the center of an emotional custody battle arrived in Oklahoma Tuesday.

They'll hold a news conference Wednesday to talk about the fight to take Baby Veronica back to South Carolina with them.

The Capobiancos say they have traveled here, as they promised they would, in hopes of seeing Veronica, and they brought with them a nationally recognized adoption reunion facilitator.

Meanwhile, Governor Mary Fallin says she won't help send the girl's biological father back to South Carolina to face charges, at least not yet.

Dusten Brown gets to have his day in court, according to Governor Fallin. She says she won't help send him back to South Carolina until at least September 12, which is Brown's next Oklahoma court hearing as he fights the legality of his arrest.

Fallin said in a statement Tuesday, "As a mother, my heart goes out to Veronica, who has been placed in a terrible situation. I can also imagine the pain that both her adopted and biological parents are feeling."

For Veronica's sake, Governor Fallin urged both sets of parents to find a solution outside of court because, "The legal system cannot deliver a happy ending in this case."

Brown's attorney in South Carolina said "the legal system there is delivering an unfair ending" to his client.

Brown was charged with custodial interference, because he missed a court-ordered meeting while he was at National Guard training. Attorney John Nichols said the courts are mixing criminal charges with civil matters.

"There is a right way to do this, and this is not the right way," Nichols said.

Nichols said custodial interference involves taking a child from the legal custodian, but Brown didn't take the child, since he already had her. He also said Veronica's "legal custodian" is still being debated.

We also heard Tuesday from the attorney representing Veronica's best interests. Angel Smith was appointed by tribal court and said the soon-to-be 4-year-old has different needs than she had as a baby. Smith said Veronica is a well-adjusted, bright child with her own words and thoughts, and it's time her voice is heard.
