Even an executive for IBM working in Beijing had to start somewhere. And that start for Philip Wood was at Oklahoma Christian University, class of 1985.
"It's been a devastating blow to all of us to learn Philip was on that flight," said Dr. Bill Goad, Executive VP of O.C.
It's been two days since a Malaysia Airline plane vanished. More than 200 passengers were on board, including Wood and several other Americans.

A computer science and math major, Philip Wood was one of those students OC Executive Vice President Dr. Bill Goad never forgot.
"Philip was definitely a man of integrity, he loved people," said Dr. Goad.
Bible Professor Dr. Stafford North has been at OC for more than 50 years and also called the Wood family neighbors until Philip was five years old.
"We always stayed in touch, a few times a year, it's a tough deal," said Dr. Stafford North, Bible Professor at O.C.
And while Wood may be remembered for his mind.
"He was a very good student, made excellent grade," said Dr. North.
His personality would shined through his creations.
"He also had a creative side to him in his work across campus," said Dr. Goad.
That creativity was captured in this sweatshirt design. A photo shared by Philip's fellow Delta Gamma Sigma service club member Ted Norton. Who wrote, "He was gentle, kind, had great taste in music and was a wonderful artist. I remember envying his ability with pen and ink drawings."
Kind words that were echoed throughout campus on Monday at a special prayer for the Wood Family.
"Peace and comfort that comes from a very difficult situation," said Dr. goad.
A difficult situation for Philip's girlfriend as well, who has more questions without answers.
"How could fate have allowed him to come into my life only to take him away again?" said Philip's girlfriend, Sarah Bajc.
So Sarah still holds on for hope.
"Everybody's completely just stopped paying attention to the act that there actually could still be survivors," said Bajc.
