OU's Joe Mixon To Be Charged With Misdemeanor

Oklahoma freshman running back Joe Mixon will be charged with a misdemeanor after being accused of assaulting a woman on Campus Corner.

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn told News 9 he is filing a misdemeanor count of an act resulting in Gross injury against Mixon Friday afternoon.

Mixon's accuser, 20-year-old Amelia Rae Molitor, claims Mixon threw a punch so powerful it knocked her unconscious for at least 20 seconds.

Mixon's attorney, Kevin Finlay, says Mixon was the one being verbally and physically attacked, and his actions were in self-defense.

In a Probable Cause Affidavit released, details were listed of what surveillance video captured of the incident.  The surveillance video showed that Mixon and Molitor were in a verbal altercation outside and inside of Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe.  While inside Pickleman's Molitor pushed Mixon.  He then lunged at her in an aggressive manner, leading with his head and with his right fist clinched by his side.  Molitor reacted by slapping Mixon, with an open right hand, near his left ear.  Mixon then struck her on the left side of her face with his closed right fist, knocking her into a table top and then to the ground.

Mixon is being withheld from participating in football related activities pending the outcome of the investigation.

OU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs and Athletics Director, Joe Castiglione, released the following statement on the OU Football Twitter page:

Finlay released the following statement, Friday afternoon:

"While we recognize that Joe has not been charged with the crime of assault and battery, we are still very disappointed that the Cleveland County District Attorney's office chose to charge Joe with a misdemeanor for grossly disturbing peace or public decency.

As we have maintained from the beginning, it is our belief that Joe reacted instinctively after being racially slurred and physically assaulted by a highly intoxicated young woman and her male friend. We strongly disagree with the series of events as portrayed by Norman PD. Justice knows no gender bias and we do not believe that Joe's actions were criminal in nature.

We are also disappointed that it appears that no assault and battery charges will be filed against the young woman for her actions on the morning of July 25th.

It is important to Joe and his family that he continues toward his goal of becoming a successful student-athlete both on and off the field at the University of Oklahoma. Joe looks forward to the opportunity to clear his name and put this unfortunate situation behind him.
