An auto-burglary suspect accused of stabbing a police dog was shot and killed by police following a high-speed chase that started in Oklahoma City and ended just north of Purcell, Sunday night.

At about 8:45 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the report of a burglary in the area of 7233 S. Air Depot in Oklahoma City. However, the suspect fled in the vehicle when officers arrived. That's when the chase began.

The pursuit lasted just over 30 minutes --  working its way to Moore and Norman and heading further south. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers were also called in to assist.

During the vehicle chase a OHP Trooper forced the vehicle to stop on I-35 near the Goldsby exit.   Police say that's when the suspect began running from them.   A K-9 officer "Kye" was used to apprehend the suspect. Police say when Kye bit the suspect, he took out a weapon and began stabbing the dog. That's when an Oklahoma City police officer opened fire on the suspect, according to Oklahoma City Police Captain Dexter Nelson.

The suspect was shot dead at the scene. The suspect's name has not been released. The officer will be placed on routine leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Kye was rushed to a vet hospital for emergency surgery. We are sad to report that he passed away Monday afternoon.
