The oldest church in Edmond is missing one of its most prized possessions.
John The Baptist Catholic Church at 900 S Boulevard Avenue is 125 years old.
For the past decade, a stone “Jesus on the cross” figure has adorned a pleasant garden on the north side of the church, facing 9th Street.
At around 2 a.m. Tuesday, surveillance video cameras recorded a late-modeled white Honda and a late-modeled white Jeep pull up. Five people got out of the vehicles. Church leaders said those people used special tools to pry free the Jesus statue and hauled it away.
Ann Keef is the church's facilities manager. “Totally bad karma I would say, you're not the first person to say that. Who would steal Jesus?” She asked.
Edmond police said anyone who has information should call 359-4448.
“There's no putting a dollar value on what this has meant to those who have spent time in this garden,” Ann Keef said late Friday afternoon.
