News 9 is learning more about the Duncan family who reportedly was murdered by their own son. Police say Alan Hruby admitted to killing his parents, John and Tinker Hruby, and Katherine Hruby, his 17-year-old sister.

“She was supposed to stay the night with me Friday, and after school she'd always just come by and say, ‘Hey,'" said friend Makenzie Craig. "She told me, ‘I've got to go home and do dishes, so I can stay with you Friday,' and after that I never heard from her.”

That was Thursday afternoon, just hours before Katherine and her parents were murdered.

“She came to my house, and she just always stopped by,” Craig said.

But the next day, Katherine never came over and didn't return Makenzie's calls or texts.

“So, we just all kind of thought maybe it was her phone,” said Craig. “Maybe she just got it taken away.”

However, Katherine's mother, Tinker, didn't answer either.

“I called her mom. I texted her mom. I didn't get a reply,” said Craig. “I even drove by her house on Saturday.”

She felt something wasn't right but stopped short of going to the Hruby's door.

“I just felt like something was wrong, and I just didn't have the guts to go up there and ask,” Craig said.

Come Monday morning after the family housekeeper found the bodies of Katherine and her parents, word quickly traveled and got back to Makenzie.

“She'd text me every morning," recalled Craig. "She'd just text me, ‘Good morning. I hope you have a great day,' and I will never get that again.”

What she did get were clues from Katherine herself -- a chain of events prosecutors said is what lead up to the murders.

“Two weeks before she told me, ‘Alan is pulling the same thing he did before with the money thing. He's fighting with my parents. They're cutting him off from everything,'" said Craig. “She told me that he took money from their parents again.”

A family who published the local news is now the tragic front-page story of the paper they once owned.

“She was happy," said Craig. "If you were having a bad day, even if her day was worse, she would try to make your day better.”

Funeral services for the Hruby family are set for 2 p.m. on Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Duncan.
