A new grant awarded to the city Oklahoma City could get you a free storm shelter.

The program is a blessing to low income Oklahomans still picking up the pieces from the May 2013 storms.

“Most of the people we assist live on Social Security. They've retired, live in their houses and can't really afford to buy or install a storm shelter. And the great part about this program is that it's not a rebate, it's a grant. They are not out of pocket any money,” said Bob Dailey, Housing Rehabilitation Coordinator.

To qualify you must live and own a home in Oklahoma City, have damage from the May 19, 20, or 31 storms, and meet annual income requirements. And the smallest amount of damage from those storms qualifies homeowners for the program.

“If you had your fence blown down, broken doors, windows, damage to your roof,” said Dailey.

Dailey estimated only 20 percent of people living in Oklahoma City have a storm shelter or safe room. And he said a sense of relief and security washed over qualifying residents as they watch a construction crew dig at their home.

“They're absolutely blown away. They can't believe they were able to get this. They feel so much safer and they are just really appreciative to get this,” he said.

Shelters are on a first come, first serve basis.
