Investigation Continues Into Midwest City Cold Case

Crime scene investigators continue to dig behind a home in Jones for a third straight day. And still lots of questions remain about what they are looking for. Midwest City Police only will say they are following possible new leads on a cold case.

Digging and prodding at this home on Main Street has speculation soaring across town.

“It's kind of nerve-racking. We are kinda in the dark right now. We don't really know what's going on,” said Josh Kerr, a Jones resident.

But Midwest City police remain tightlipped about all information surrounding this investigation.

Some in town believe this could be a break in the Kirsten Hatfield cold case from 1997. Hatfield was 8 years old when she was taken from her bed in the middle of the night. But investigators won't confirm if this is the cold case that's suddenly heated up.

Hatfield's grandfather spoke with News 9 over the phone on Thursday. He said police have not contacted the family, but said, “This is the first glimpse of hope for the family. My granddaughter is buried like a dog somewhere. She deserves a proper, Christian burial."

The digging began Tuesday. Kerr noticed the out-of-character activity that night while driving by.

“I drove by and I saw the CSI truck and Midwest City police car and I immediately thought there was probably a homicide. And then the next couple of days I saw backhoe and everybody searching the backyard,” he said.

A medical examiner's vehicle has remained at the home for the past two days. The ME's office confirmed they've not received any remains yet. But items from inside the home were taken out and searched through.

“It's a small town and you know to think there might be a homicide there or something like that it's kind of scary,” said Kerr.

News 9 spoke with a neighbor who tells us the woman who lives in this home has been gone for many years and the house has sat vacant. And says she has nothing to do with the investigation.
