A suspect is on the run after police say he shot and killed a teenager in Shawnee during an attempted home invasion robbery over the weekend.

There were five friends inside the home early Saturday morning playing video games when they say a total stranger wearing a mask tried to break in and then opened fire.

Breanna Alvarez says she's still in shock that her good friend was fatally shot inside her Shawnee home of just two months.

"I, we don't stay here now. This is like the first time we've been back since it happened," Alvarez said. "He was just a really close friend, like we were all about to get a house together and he was about to be our roommate and we were going to move in less than a month."

But everything changed Saturday around 2 a.m., when a masked man knocked on the door, then tried to force his way in.

"One of my friends opened the door and they saw a gun barrel just slip through the crack of the door," Alvarez said.

The friend slammed the door, but the suspect shot through it, leaving a big bullet hole. The lone gunshot hit only one person, 17-year-old Karter Alderman, who was shot in the head while sitting on the couch.

"It was one of the worst things I've ever seen," Alvarez said.

Karter was taken to a Shawnee hospital, but died on the way to OU Medical Center. He didn't live at the home with Alvarez and her boyfriend, but stayed with them from time to time. The night of the shooting, Karter's girlfriend and another friend were with him.

The home is directly across the street from Oklahoma Baptist University, which has 24-7 police patrol. Neighbors are stunned over the deadly shooting.

"We're not unlike Oklahoma City. We've got our problems here too, I'm sure with gangs and crime," said neighbor James Karcher, whose friend was beat up and robbed in a home invasion on his street in Shawnee recently.

Meanwhile Karter's killer is still on the loose and police only have a vague description.

"I don't really know what he was trying to do. He was by himself and there were cars around, so I don't know why he would try to like get in," Alvarez said.

Karter's family has since been to the house, which now has a blanket over the couch where he died.

"He was too young to go. He was always so full of energy and life," Alvarez said.

Friends held a candlelight vigil for Karter on Saturday night at Shawnee Lake. They plan to hold another one as funeral arrangements are pending.

Police say anyone with info or surveillance footage of the home from Saturday should call Crime Stoppers at (405) 273-2121.
