Several woman who accuse a now former Oklahoma City police officer of sexual assault filed a civil lawsuit against him. This comes as Daniel Holtzclaw's criminal case is already underway.

The lawsuit is in the very early stages and could be delayed because of the criminal case.

“I don’t think there’s enough money, what he did to me,” one victim said. “Can’t bring my sanity back after what he’s done. I think of this everyday all day long. It’s in my mind. Regardless it’s there.”

And that's something you simply can't put a price on.

“One of the difficult things that juries face in cases like this is trying to assess how you compensate someone for this kind of injury,” Attorney Mark Hammons said.

Court documents state those injuries should be "valued at a sum in excess of $75,000" and  the actions of former Oklahoma City Police Officer Daniel Holtzclaw caused this woman "extreme mental and emotional suffering."

Oklahoma law does not provide a set standard for this kind of suffering but does recognize it is a serious injury. It's up to jury to decide just how much monetarily.

“A jury is really left with its own common sense and its own common experience to determine what appropriate compensation there is,” Hammons said.

It is an injury that some people battle for years.

“That’s torture. It’s stress. It’ll traumatize you. It does all the above. I don’t wish that on anybody,” one victim said. “I will never forget his face as long as I live. Never.”

It is because this woman came forward in the first place that Holtzclaw was ever caught. She was the first voice then, and is the first now in a lawsuit on behalf of not only herself but all the other victims as well.

“It changes how they view themselves. It changes how they view public authority and law enforcement,” Hammons said.

No matter the outcome of the criminal case, it does not affect the civil case.
