The Oklahoma Republican Party chairman wants to immediately outlaw abortion in Oklahoma and is asking the governor to call a special session to do it.
Oklahoma GOP Chairman Randy Brogdon argues the U.S. Supreme Court has no legal authority on the issue in the state.
This is latest in a series of recent controversial statements made by Brogdon. Several Republicans said they're concerned about what this is doing to the party.
The undercover video of a Planned Parenthood executive discussing what anti-abortion activists say is the selling of body parts set off Brogdon.
“We have the moral authority and the legal authority to stop the killing of the unborns,” Brogdon said Monday.
On his blog, Brogdon said “if there was ever a need for a special legislative session this is it!”
When News 9 asked him about the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal, this was his answer:
“Just because they have an opinion on a particular issue does not make it law and there’s no possible way the rogue justices can come to Oklahoma and make us kill babies,” Brogdon said after he was asked about the Roe v. Wade decision.
Dale Reneau has been involved in the Republican Party for decades and said he believes Brogdon and his recent antics could be giving the party as a whole a bad reputation.
“The statement that Oklahomans need not follow the ruling in Roe v Wade is 1) inaccurate and 2) clearly and openly advocating violation of the law of the land,” Reneau said .
A couple weeks ago, Brogdon's Facebook post comparing food stamp recipients to animals drew national attention. Also this summer, several members of the party expressed outrage after learning Brogdon hired an executive director that had been convicted of domestic violence.
“He should either resign or be removed, that’s my opinion,” Reneau said.
As for the special session, Governor Mary Fallin said "the biggest hurdle to protecting life in this country is the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, which blocks states from banning abortion."
