A man is arrested after admitting to intentionally setting a fire in his apartment early Sunday morning.
The incident took place around 1:00 a.m. when Oklahoma City fire crews were called to a commercial fire alarm at the Hayden Place Apartments at 6307 N.W. 10th St.
Upon arrival, crews reported light smoke from a first floor unit where a victim was found in the doorway. Crews immediately pulled out the man, identified as 44-year-old David Sheffield, to safety. He was treated by EMSA at the scene.
According to the report, most of the fire was contained to a bedroom mattress and was extinguished quickly.
Fire investigators were called to the scene and determined that one other fire had originated in the closet of the bedroom and had no connection to the fire in the mattress.
Investigators questioned Sheffield, who said he had been hit in the head with a brick by an unknown person and didn’t remember the fire.
But according to EMSA, he had no head trauma. They treated him for burning eyes and he refused transport.
Investigators said that’s when they questioned Sheffield for a second time and he admitted to starting the fire.
Sheffield was arrested for first degree arson.
The fire caused an estimated $2,500 for property damage and another $1,000 for a new mattress and contents.
