Instant Analysis: OSU Sqeaks Past Inept Longhorns

Oklahoma State (4-0) defeated Texas (1-3), 30-27, on Saturday in Austin. It was a wild and sloppy game, and there will be plenty to talk about. But for now, here's some instant analysis. Stick around for the full game story.

What went well

OSU did some nice things on Saturday. The Cowboys outgained the Longhorns by more than a hundred yards and converted 26 first downs to UT’s 11. The OSU defense also stepped up in a big way (more on them below). Also, the J.W. Walsh package worked well, resulting in two touchdowns. But for the most part, this was a sloppy performance, and the Pokes’ are mighty fortunate that Texas made so many mistakes.

What didn’t

So, so much. Quarterback Mason Rudolph struggled mightily, throwing a pair of interceptions and what could have/should have been another pair. He also lost the ball in the pocket, which led to a Texas scoop-and-score play. This was the first time we’ve seen the young man really struggle, but brighter days are inevitably ahead.

4-Peat

The win is OSU’s fourth straight in Austin. It’s the first time the Cowboys have ever done that. So despite the sloppiness, it’s a feat worth celebrating.

Game ball

The entire defense. Credit defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer and his troops for holding dynamic QB Jerrod Heard and Texas to just 13 points. The Longhorns’ other 14 points came off of Rudolph turnovers. This was the first great test for the Pokes’ D, and they passed with flying colors.

OSU hosts Kansas State next Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
