Burglary Suspect Shot By Officer At Rose State College

A burglary suspect was shot by an officer when he threatened him with a gun early Monday morning on the campus of Rose State College.

According to Midwest City police, just before 4 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the report of a first-degree burglary at a home in the 600 block of Pepper Tree Lane. The resident reported that two suspects kicked in the back door and were in the sun room.

When officers arrived at the home, the suspects reportedly jumped the fence and began running in a northwesterly direction across Rose State College parking lot.  An officer began immediate foot pursuit. 

Police said the suspects continued through the courtyard of the campus, and one suspect was found crouching down by a trash bin just west of the Aquatics Center.  The officer gave verbal commands several times for the suspect to show his hands.

At one point, police said the suspect pulled out a handgun and was then shot multiple times.  The male suspect, who has not been identified at this time, was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.

“The officer, based on the information and evidence at the scene, had no choice but to discharge his firearm.  The suspect refused to follow the officer’s command and in my opinion, put the officer in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm at the moment when he (suspect) produced a gun," said Chief Brandon Clabes. “Rose State College is a secure and safe higher education institution, this is an isolated incident and only involved the campus because the suspect fled the crime scene onto the school’s property.”

The officer involved in the shooting has been relieved of field duty pending the completion of the criminal and administrative investigation.  This is standard procedure, police said.

Tamra Pratt, Vice President Of Student Affairs for Rose State College, said the campus is safe and secure. Classes will go on as scheduled on Monday, but some areas may be blocked off while police continue their investigation.
