In a statement, Norman schools officials said they are not surprised by the message, as copycat messages are typical, and both messages will be included in the ongoing investigation. Out of an abundance of caution, the Norman Police Department has maintained an increased presence at both high schools.
“This behavior will not be tolerated. Any student who is identified as a participant in these incidents will be disciplined by the school to the fullest extent of the law. Additionally, the district will cooperate with the police department, which will file criminal charges against the parties involved. Two days of school have now been disrupted for a majority of our students who are here to participate and learn,” school officials said in a statement.
If you have any information regarding these incidents, call the Norman North office at (405)-366-5954 or call Crime Stoppers at (405)-366-STOP.
Tuesday, a photo showing someone holding a gun began circulating on social media among Norman students. Schools officials said they have identified the person in that photo, and determined that the photo was just a "prank" and was not related to the threatening messages found. The gun in the photo was also not real.
School officials released to the following statement concerning the photo,
"Thank you to everyone who has shared information to assist with the investigation regarding messages found at Norman North. Thanks to your efforts, the district was notified of a concerning image posted on social media and immediately contacted police. Through the Norman Police Department's investigation, and in cooperation with the school district, the student in the image has been identified. Police believe it was a prank and not connected with earlier written threats, and also believe the student did not intend physical harm. Although the image was a hoax and the weapon photographed was not a real firearm, it has caused significant disruption for students, administrators, staff and police. The student is not at school and the district is pursuing appropriate disciplinary action. The Norman Police Department continues to investigate the earlier written threats. When a suspect is identified the police will present charges to the District Attorney's office. We appreciate your continued assistance in helping us resolve the issue."
