Fraternal Order Of Police Surprises Cadet's Widow With Gift

It's been three years since Elke Meeus' husband Kelley Chase was killed during training at the Oklahoma City police academy.

His name is forever engraved on the Oklahoma law enforcement memorial, something Meeus called a show of gratitude.

Chase was killed during a wrestling training session. He suffered severe head injuries according to reports.

But on Wednesday, the Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police wanted to show their gratitude to her, during this season of giving.

“I was just expecting to enjoy Christmas dinner. This is a nice surprise,” Meeus said.

It all started with a Facebook post. Elke, who is currently a student and Oklahoma City University Law School, wrote “Everyone is Warned. I am going to look like a geek next semester. I just bought myself an early Christmas present: pilot case on wheels … I hope it will fit my gigantic dinosaur of a laptop.”

That's when a light bulb when off in FOP Vice President Mark Nelson's head.

“This is an opportunity to be a blessing and a help to someone who's really trying to do something good for their family,” he said.

At the FOP's annual Christmas party at their offices, a surprise was waiting for Meeus. They tricked her into thinking she was getting a simple thank you, but it was much more.

The group helped raise enough money for a $750 Best Buy gift card for a new laptop, just in time for Christmas. It was a gift from her second family in honor of her first.

“Even though it feels like it was yesterday sometimes and sometimes it feels like it was ages ago. FOP has been there for me ever since,” Meeus said.

Meeus said she didn’t have any laptop in mind but wanted to start shopping right away. She also did not have a focus on law in the OCU Law School yet.
