Oklahoma Public School board has voted to explore charter school expansion options. Now it’s encouraging parents, teachers and staff to get informed on the possible changes.
OKC Schools Superintendent Rob Neu says there have been rumors and misinformation on how the expansion process will play out. He says starting as early as next week, OKCPS could announce the dates and times for community meetings so parents can give input in the process.
John Rex Elementary downtown, Kipp in NE OKC and Santa Fe South in south OKC have expressed an interest in expanding.
In some cases, that could mean turning existing schools into charter programs to offer more grade levels. None of the charter schools release details on possible locations.
Neu says it’s still too early to those details.
“What you would be doing is excluding the community from a conversation, a really important conversation, on who does or who doesn't want their schools to be a charter school,” says Neu.
Charters programs News 9 spoke with don't have a timetable for their expansion.
According to OKC Public School Fall of 2017 is the earliest a change would be made.
