As reported by News 9 earlier this week, the first abortion clinic in Oklahoma City since the 1970s is set to open this summer near SW 44th and Blackwelder. Some people in the area are not happy with the news.

“I think abortion is a crime. It’s killing babies, and I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Pastor Fernando Esquibel said.

Right now, the building located at 1240 SW 44th is empty, but at one point it housed an eye clinic. County Assessor records show the property was bought last year by Trust Women Foundation and will soon be the only abortion clinic in Oklahoma City right around the corner from a church.

"I believe in life, not death," Esquibel said.

Also nearby are businesses and neighborhoods.

"I don't like it. I'm not really with abortion. I do have two boys of my own and I think everybody is pretty much grown up to take all the necessary needs to have a baby, and if you do there has to be consequences if you decide to kill a baby," Yasmine Castillo said.

Those who live here say they've seen protestors holding signs, and that's how some of them found out what was about to open up shop on the corner.

"If I can so something to stop it, I will do it. I will protest. I will do something," Esquibel said.

News 9 spoke with the City of Oklahoma City, and this type of clinic is just like any other clinic and needs no permit or anything different than any other business. We also spoke with the Oklahoma City Police Department, and they have no concerns about protests or any acts of violence with the opening of the place.

Deb Gruver, the Director Of Communication for Trust Women South Wind Women’s Center, released this statement Friday, May 27:

Trust Women South Wind Women’s Center intends to be a good neighbor in Oklahoma City, just as we are in Wichita, Kansas. Our clinic will provide high-quality reproductive health care and ensure that women in the Oklahoma City area have access to and control over their legal reproductive rights.”
