An Edmond hunter is waiting to see if he'll set a new state record with his whitetail buck.

Steven Everett is holding history.

This deer rack is 255 inches and will be officially scored next month. It's 28 points, over 10 pounds and could break the state record of 248 inches when all the deductions are factored in.

"He was a big deer. Probably the biggest I've seen in my lifetime," Everett said.

Everett nicknamed the deer Goliath and hunted him hard for three years in Logan County.

Some years, Everett never saw him.

"It haunted me until we got him this year. Every day, I thought about it," he said.

Several other hunters also had their eyes on him, but he was smart and nocturnal.

"They had pictures of him as a 10-point in 2008-2009," he said.

The chase finally ended opening day of rifle in November.

The deer was at least 10 years old, possibly 12, with only two teeth left.

"I'm going to live this up. I may never get to do something like this again, so we're going to tell the story and then I'll tell my grandkids about it," he said.
