An Oklahoma City councilman has been charged with embezzlement Friday, the Oklahoma County District Attorney's office confirmed to News 9.
John A. Pettis Jr. faces three felony counts of embezzlement and one count of intentionally failing to file state income taxes. The three counts of embezzlement center on Pettis' work with three charities: the Southern Leadership Enhancement Center, the Oklahoma Institute for Minority Affairs, and the Rhonda K. Hutson Foundation.
In the first two counts, Pettis is accused of misappropriating more than $25,000. The specific amount was not specified in court documents filed in Oklahoma County District Court on Friday.
The third count accuses Pettis of misappropriating more than $1,000.
Pettis is accused of perpetrating the offenses between 2009 and 2017.
Also for those eight years, Pettis is accused of intentionally failing the file state income taxes.
