The wait is almost over for medical marijuana to hit the market in Oklahoma. Applications for individual and business licenses will be available starting Saturday morning at 10 a.m. through the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority website.

The applications will be available on computers and smart devices, but specially-trained staff members are already on standby to help with any questions.

Before you get started, you will need a physician recommendation form, which is available right now at omma.ok.gov, which is where you will return to apply.

If you do not have access to the Internet, health officials suggest going to your local library or asking friends or family for help. They say an online-only system was easier to roll out than paper.

Health Commissioner Tom Bates says, “If we had to go down that road, it might take as much as 100 employees we’d have to hire to get that done.”

Instead, the OMMA is made up of a 40-person team. Five of them are manning the OMMA call center, which is already getting hundreds of calls daily. You can reach them at 405-522-OMMA or email omma@ok.gov.

OMMA spokesperson Melissa Miller says staff can answer “any questions about what you have to provide in your application or things like that, the rules and regulations.”

For technical issues with the website, like login trouble, email tech support at support-ok@mycomplia.com.

For individuals seeking a license, be prepared to upload a photo for your new card along with a copy of your state ID or license. Business owners going into the marijuana industry also have to provide a background check.

Otherwise, you will not be approved.

Miller says, “If the owner doesn’t meet the requirements for felony convictions because of their background check, that would be an example, or if they can’t prove Oklahoma residency.”

The cost for an individual application is $100, but Medicare and Medicaid patients pay a reduced rate of $20. Business applications cost $2,500. Applicants must pay the fee using a Visa, Discover or MasterCard on the website.

You can expect a response to your application by mail within 14 business days, but if your doctor is registered with OMMA, you will be moved to the front of the line.

The call center will be closed this weekend as the applications go live, but you can still email your questions in. OMMA will start taking calls again and begin processing applications Monday morning at 8:30.
