Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials say a suspect has been apprehended by the OHP Tactical Team, and is in custody following a trooper involved shooting Sunday morning in Woodward.
According to reports, the trooper, identified as Austin Ellis, attempted to initiate a traffic stop at 34th and Oklahoma in Woodward, for a seat belt violation. Authorities said the driver failed to yield, and instead pulled into the parking lot of a hotel located on Highway 183.
The driver engaged in gunfire with the trooper and the trooper responded, according to report.
The driver fled the scene to a home in Woodward with the trooper in pursuit. The OHP Tactical Team was called out.
OHP, Woodward County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Woodward Police and Fire Departments were all stationed near Highway 270 and Western Avenue.
The trooper was shot in the vest. He was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with internal bleeding. Officials said he is expected to survive.
The suspect has been identified as Arturo Ramirez, according to OHP Captain Stan Walker.
