Central Oklahoma Humane Society and Palomar teamed up to create an “Animal Advocate” position to help victims of domestic violence.

Experts say it’s common for domestic violence and animal abuse to happen in the same environment.

The advocate will get the animal veterinary care, and also get the animal to a safety in a foster home, while their owner gets the help he or she needs.

“That doesn’t mean they’re giving their animal up,” said President and CEO of Central Oklahoma Humane Society Dana McCrory. “That means we’re going to help take care of their animal for them until they’re on their feet.”

“We’re trying to bring those together to where animals and people can be taken care of at the same place because at the end of the day, they’re both being victimized and they both need the services,” said CEO of Palomar Anden Bull.

The position, paid for by the Watershed Animal Fund, will be launched in a few weeks.
