A trial is scheduled to begin Monday for a father charged in the death of his 8-year-old son, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

It's taken more than a year and a half to get this case to a jury.

The child's parents, Zaneta Campbell and Noel Cruz, were arrested in April of 2017 for the death of their 8-year-old son Noah. Cruz is charged with second-degree murder and possession of meth, while Campbell is charged with child neglect.

Police say Noah died after his father left his Nissan Xterra running in a closed garage and passed out while his son was inside the home. A family friend discovered the two unconscious at their home near 129th East Avenue and 31st Street on March 24, 2017.

An affidavit says meth was found in Noel Cruz's system and in his truck.

Prosecutors say he has a history of substance abuse, and Noah was not supposed to be left in his father's care. Cruz was scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Monday, October 1.  Campbell will stand trial for child neglect at a later date.

Noah had muscular dystrophy and used a wheelchair.
