An Oklahoma librarian is accused of embezzling more than $15,000 from a library.
Investigators said Benita “Kay” Weaver used money from the Chandler-Watts Memorial Library in Stratford for personal shopping between 2017 and 2020.
Agents from OSBI conducted the investigation.
According to court records, a recent hire at the library noticed “odd” purchases in library paperwork. The purchases included Bible covers, T-shirts, coffee mugs and tote bags.
The employee, according to court records, also discovered in-store purchases on Weaver’s last day of employment and 18 days after Weaver’s last day on the job.
Investigators discovered items from the library were also missing including books, computers, furniture, decorations, and other electronics.
During a search warrant of Weaver’s home, investigators found nearly $4,000 worth of library property and nearly $2,000 worth of books Weaver purchased for the library.
Weaver told investigators she purchased some of the items with personal money and some of the items she was going to take back to the library.
The Chandler-Watts Memorial Library operates from two different accounts; a state aid fund and a reading grant fund awarded to the library in 2016.
Weaver was booked in the Garvin County jail and is out on a $5,000 bond.
