A man was killed by police Thursday after waiving a gun around a senior living center, according to police.

Police released new details on Monday in a deadly officer-involved shooting at a northeast Oklahoma City senior living center. An officer shot and killed one of the residents during a confrontation in the lobby last week.

The shooting became the city’s second deadly officer-involved shooting of the year and drew criticism from citizens against the use of lethal force.

A domestic call on Thursday at the Marie McGuire Plaza involved 31-year-old Azjaynee Owens-Bey and his girlfriend. Residents told police Owens-Bey was pointing a gun at people outside the building.

Police said the armed man ran into the building when he saw officers.

“Everything seemed to happen very quickly once the officers arrived on scene,” said Captain Valerie Littlejohn, Oklahoma City Police Department. “And so, officers immediately took action at that point.”

Police followed Owens-Bey into the building's lobby where they said he pointed his gun at officers and fired one shot at them. One officer fired back, killing Owens-Bey at the scene. One of the leaders of Black Lives Matter Oklahoma City called for transparency from the police department in the shooting that took the man's life.

“We’re going to continue to ask for very specific things the Oklahoma City Police Department should not have a problem in providing which is transparency, accountability and answers about what happened,” said T. Sheri Dickerson, local activist.

Police said the officer who used deadly force is a 20-year veteran of the department and was placed on paid administrative leave.

The fatal shooting that happened in the lobby of the building created panic among residents and their loved ones.

“People that I love,” said T. Sheri Dickerson, a local activist. “My family members are in this building. It always causes a sense of terror.”

T. Sheri Dickerson is one of the leaders of Black Lives Matter Oklahoma City and has been vocal in her fight to end the use of lethal force.

“We’re going to continue to ask for very specific things the Oklahoma City Police Department should not have a problem in providing,” said Dickerson. “Which is transparency, accountability, and answers about what happened.”

Dickerson did not know the man who was shot and killed by police but heard he had a positive impact on the community. “I was told that it was a person who does a lot of service to the community,” said Dickerson. “Provides haircuts and helps uplift the overall morale of a lot of people in the community.”
