Smokey Bear and wildfire expert Mark Goler joined News 9 on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to mark a significant milestone, Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday.
The celebration features a special exhibit of Rudy Wendland’s original Smokey Bear prints at the Forest Heritage Center, located at Town and Beavers Bend State Park. The exhibit, open through August 9th, commemorates Smokey’s role in wildfire prevention.
While the artwork pays tribute to Smokey’s legacy, the event also underscores a critical message: wildfire prevention.
Goler highlighted the urgency of the issue, particularly given the current hot and dry conditions.
“Oklahoma frequently experiences severe wildfire seasons,” Goler said, emphasizing the need for homeowners to assess and improve their properties' fire resilience.
For practical advice on safeguarding homes, Goler recommends visiting Firewise.org.
The site offers resources to help individuals evaluate their properties' vulnerability to wildfires and implement necessary changes to enhance protection.
Goler also pointed out that wildfire risks in Oklahoma are year-round.
“We face potential wildfires from January 1st to December 31st,” Goler said.
Currently, many areas are experiencing severe dryness, making fire prevention efforts even more crucial.
As Smokey Bear celebrates his 80th year, the event serves as both a tribute to his legacy and a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant against wildfires.
