With school districts across the Oklahoma City metro looking for bus drivers ahead of the school year, Yukon educators say drivers are more important than they realize.

Yukon Public School's director of transportation said the ongoing bus driver shortage doesn’t just hit affect the Oklahoma City metro, but runs deep across the state.

"I think a big part is just pay," Christy Clemons said. "It's really not a full-time position, it's ma part-time position."

Clemons said drivers work six hours a day, 173 days a year, but they also make a difference in student's lives.

"We set the tone for the entire day," Clemons said. "We come in with a positive attitude. We're the first person the kid sees, and that's how we make our difference.

Clemons said an excellent candidate for a bus driver is someone who wants to make a difference.

"We can teach anyone to drive a school bus, but we can't make them want to make a difference," Clemons said.

Yukon Public Schools offers paid two-week training.

Yukon students will climb on board school buses next Wednesday, but the district says for anyone interested in applying, all that is needed is a valid license and a clean record.
