Several more districts, including students in Broken Arrow, are back in school on Wednesday.
Broken Arrow says there's a lot to be excited about this year. One of the district’s plans over the summer was to focus on teacher and staff recruiting and retention. Superintendent Chuck Perry says for the first time in a long time, the district has filled all of its bus driver positions. All teacher positions have been filled except for special education positions.
Reese Hundley is a teacher at Broken Arrow's Vanguard Academy and he said the first day of school is one of the best days of the year.
"This is the best day of the year and it's the most important day of the year. It's really when we set the tone, establish expectations, but really it's about making connections and developing relationships," said Hundley.
New this year. the district installed secure entries at the elementary and middle schools and most of its secondary sites. This means there will be a camera and mic that staff can use to talk to and let people in after the school day starts as a safety measure.
