El RENO, Oklahoma - The weather didn't stop folks from firing up the grill at the 21st Burger Day Festival in El Reno.
El Reno has landed three spots in the 100 greatest burger joints, so it only make sense they dedicated an entire day to the fried onion hamburger.
Take it from the burger eating champ himself Tevarus Young. But this 10-year-old wasn't the only one in the spotlight, the star of the show was up front and center. Underneath the fog of smoke, 250 pounds of beef, 150 pounds of onions and 350 pounds of bun were cooked up, packed with picked and mustard to make a 750 pound fried onion burger, the largest in the world.
"Biggest trick is keeping it cooking even, make sure the fire's good," said El Reno Fire Chief Kent Lagaly. "I think it's the best cut ever, at least it's the best cut since last year."
"It's just huge, it's the biggest one I've seen. I've been to a couple of other ones in Texas and the one in Tennessee, they're not even half the size of this. It's worth it," said Clayton Morse, who visited the festival from Louisiana.
The festival brought a lot of smiles to many hungry folks from as far as Australia to Louisiana, who couldn't wait to take a bite out of the giant burger. It didn't take long for the world's biggest burger to vanish, but it won't vanish from the record books, at least until next year maybe.
Last year, about 4000 fried onion burgers were sold at the festival.
