FORT SILL, Oklahoma – A large grassfire burned more than 1,500 acres on post and in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Tuesday.
Fort Sill officials say the source of the fire, the Quanah Parker impact area, is out after burning more than 1,500 acres Tuesday.
Post firefighters will be monitoring for hot spots and helping refuge teams into Wednesday.
Fire crews from Elgin, Cache, Indiahoma and Meers were fighting the large fire that continued to burn in some areas overnight. Treasure Lake Job Corps was evacuated as a precaution, but the school was not damaged. Firefighters began back burns at 10 p.m. to protect all buildings and facilities at the site.
The Red Cross set up cots overnight at the school in Indiahoma for an estimated 185 students and an estimated 15 staff members all from the Treasure Lake Job Corps campus. The Red Cross was also working with the Salvation Army to provide meals for the evacuees.
