OU Designs Campus Map To Help Disabled

Over the years the University of Oklahoma in Norman had addressed handicapped access in a number of ways--with parking spaces, ramps, automatic doors, and flashing lights at crosswalks.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Over the years the University of Oklahoma in Norman had addressed handicapped access in a number of ways--with parking spaces, ramps, automatic doors, and flashing lights at crosswalks.

Now OU is going a step further. It is developing a campus map designed with the disabled in mind. It's already online on OU's website.

"It will assist them in locating more readily an accessible entrance to the facility, where the accessible restrooms are located," said Suzette Dyer with OU's Disability Research Center. "It will help them when they're either visiting campus or when they're scheduling classes."

OU visitor Josh Claassen uses an electric scooter to get around campus and said he is glad to hear about the new map.

"That sounds great, really," Claassen said. "I do think that would help a lot of people."

A print version of the map should be available in a few weeks.
