SPENCER, Oklahoma – Police say one suspect is on the run after his accomplice was shot and killed during a home invasion early Friday morning in Spencer.
Two men kicked in the back door of a house near N.E. 36th and Stumpff around 2 a.m. Friday. Both men had guns, but the homeowners struggled with them, trying to force the suspects out of their house.
The couple's 16-year-old son began scuffling with the second suspect and managed to get his gun away from him. While his parents were struggling with the other suspect, the gun went off and struck the man in the chest.
The suspect ran out of the house, but collapsed in a neighbor's yard. He was rushed to OU Medical Center, where he died. Because he did not have any identification on him, police do not know who the man is. The State Medical Examiner's Office is trying to determine his identity.
The other suspect ran away and has not been caught.
The Spencer Police Department is still investigating the case, and they've recovered the two guns the suspects brought to the scene. They've interviewed the family twice to make sure their stories match the evidence.
"At this point, it's our understanding they don't know these people," said Spencer Police Chief Virgil Green. "At some point, once we're able to identify this person, maybe it is someone they do know. Right now, it's somebody they don't know."
Police say it appears the homeowners were defending themselves, which means they likely will not face charges. When their investigation is complete, they will turn the case over to the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office.
