GLENPOOL, Oklahoma -- Glenpool police are looking for a man who stole a car with a child inside from the parking lot of the Growing Tree Learning Center day care, according to Chief Dennis Waller of the Glenpool Police Department.
The car and the child have been recovered, but the man fled and had not been located as of late Wednesday afternoon.
Waller said officers spotted the car near the Best Western Hotel just east of U.S. Highway 75 at about 151st Street. After a short pursuit, the man abandoned the vehicle with the child inside.
The man ran into some woods area near the high school, Waller said. A Bixby K9 officer was brought to the heavily wood area. Police located some stolen items from the car at a spot in the woods but were unable to locate the suspect.
Glenpool Public Schools was on lockdown as police searched for the suspect. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 10 a.m.
"We received a notification from the police that we could cancel our lockdown," Superintendent of Schools Kathy Coley said.
"We appreciate parents working with us in this procedure. We've practiced it, but this is the first time it's been for real," she said.
The child was not harmed, police say.
The suspect is described as a white or possibly Hispanic male in his early 20s with an average build. He was last seen wearing dark-colored shorts – either blue or black -- and a white tank top. He was previously seen wearing a yellow shirt.
