It happened around 10:30 am.
Authorities say the ambulance was heading east near N.W. 10th Street and May Avenue when it collided with a car. The ambulance was en route to a medical call.
The man inside the car was injured in the wreck. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
The two paramedics in the ambulance were not injured in the wreck.
EMSa officials released the following statement Saturday:
"EMSA paramedics extend our deepest sympathy to family of the driver who was killed today at NW10th and May. The horrific crash underscores the awareness and importance of public safety. Tragic events can occur in the rush for emergency responders to be at a patients side. Our thoughts also are with the EMSA medics who will never forget the point of impact and the tragedy that followed. "
