Firefighters extinguished a massive fire at an abandoned high school in Spencer Tuesday.
Neighbors spotted flames at Dunjee High School just after 11 a.m. The school is located at 4300 Adair, near N.E. 36th Street and N. Hiwassee Road.
Because the fire was so large, firefighters had to take a defensive stance. They poured water on it from the outside because it was too dangerous to go inside the building.
Crews spent hours battling the flames. They spent the afternoon monitoring hot spots.
It's not known yet how the fire started.
Oklahoma City Public Schools spokesperson Tierney Tinnin says the school was built in 1934 and closed in 1972. The district sold Dunjee High School in 1996, so it is no longer part of the district.
The district still owns the gymnasium, but the structure is not attached to the building and is some distance away.
Oklahoma civil rights pioneer Clara Luper taught history at Dunjee High School in the 1950s and 1960s.
No one was hurt in the fire.
