WACO, Texas – Twenty-seven percent shooting isn't enough to win very many conference games, much less against the undefeated No. 1 team in the country.
The Sooners couldn't do much of anything offensively in an 81-54 loss to the Baylor Bears on Monday night in Waco.
Led as usual by 6-8 forward Brittney Griner, the Bears used their suffocating defense to keep Oklahoma fully in check and win the rebounding and turnover battles.
Griner had 27 points to go with eight rebounds and eight blocks in the Bears' win. She also hit 13 out of 13 free throws, a dangerous weapon for the nation's most dominant post player.
Whitney Hand played all 40 minutes for OU and led the Sooners with 20 points. Sharane Campbell was the only other Sooner in double figures with 13.
The Sooners actually jumped out to an early lead but it didn't last long. Foul trouble started to rack up quickly for the outsized Oklahoma team and Baylor lived at the free throw line for much of the game.
Baylor led 41-30 at halftime and only expanded on that lead as OU missed its first 16 field goals of the second half.
Multiple players were hampered by foul trouble for Oklahoma, with Kaylon Williams fouling out and Nicole Griffin, Aaryn Ellenberg, Jelena Cerina and Joanna McFarland all picking up four.
The Sooners will have a couple of days off before returning home to host Missouri on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip time.
