Cherokee Nation Marshals now have a presence at the Claremore Indian Hospital, thanks to a new "cross-deputization" agreement.
Previously, the hospital – as a federal facility – was under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Marshals Service. Now tribal marshals can cross into the jurisdiction for criminal cases and other work.
"This is a big relief to our citizens who are treated at Claremore Indian Hospital and to our marshals," said Principal Chief Bill John Baker, when the agreement was announced.
"This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our head marshal, Shannon Buhl, and his staff."
Chad McCarter, James Harper, Franky Dreadfulwater, Shannon Buhl, Danny Tanner, Mike Roach and Shawnna Roach were sworn into office Monday in a cross-deputization agreement with the U.S. Marshals Service.
The tribe also has cross-deputization agreements with more than 50 other municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies across Oklahoma, according to a news release from the Cherokee Nation.
