It's not the summer vacation fifth grader Erika Ramirez thought she'd be having. On one of the final days of class before school got out for summer break, she started to feel sick.
"We were outside and I got too hot. I felt a little sick inside. I started throwing up. My stomach started hurting," said Erika Ramirez, who was eventually taken to the hospital.
The 10-year-old's parents were told Erika's kidneys were failing and she'd eventually need a transplant.
"It's a little scary," Erika said.
The family says they can't afford the surgery which could cost around $250,000. They are planning fundraisers later this summer and have already held two garage sales.
The family also tells News 9 Erika's classmates at Truman Elementary school are also planning to hold events to help pay for the surgery.
"We are working hard to get the money for her transplant, so she can be the girl she used to be," said Marian Ramirez. Erika's cousin.
Erika gets dialysis several times a week and is taking medication that cost several hundred dollars a month.
The family has set up a donation fund at BancFirst, under the name "Erika Kidney Transplant Fund." You can make a donation at any branch.
