Arcadia was the site for hundreds of women and guns Saturday and organizers of the 13th annual Women's Fun Shoot say the event is growing into the largest of its kind.
The ladies were kind enough to allow News 9 to spend the afternoon shooting targets with them. Four hundred women took part in the event, which included four gun ranges and 22 different riffles. In recent years, organizers say the event is bringing out quite the crowd.
"Most of the women here have never even picked up a gun," Oklahoma City Gun Club president Susie Rouse said. "Sometimes they [ask], 'Can I put a picture of my boss [on the target]?,'" laughed Rouse.
Rouse says the event is funded through a grant from the NRA and local sponsors.
"I got out a lot of aggression this morning," shooter Amy Killman said. "I like the smell of the gun powder."
A group of law students from Oklahoma City University was in the crowd. They put the books aside for an afternoon of fun.
"[Law school is] an incredibly stressful situation and so [shooting] is a very good stress reliever," OCU law student Monica Ybarra-Bennett said.
News 9's Michael Konopasek also unloaded some stress Saturday. It was his first time firing a rifle. Before shooting the weapon, he called the experience unnerving. But, after firing about 20 bullets, he says he was ready to shoot even more.
The president of the club says she made the registration for the event public in January. The event was full by March. The Women's Fun Shoot is held on the second Saturday of September each year at the Oklahoma City Gun Club in Arcadia.
