A Midwest City police officer shot and killed a suspect Monday morning at a home on Lions Park Place, which is just south of Midwest Boulevard and S.E. 15th Street.

Around 7 a.m., an officer responded to a report of suspicious activity at a house. When he arrived, there was a small explosion in the garage.

Police say a man carrying a rifle and a machete then emerged from the garage and approached the officer. Police say he appeared to be burned on his torso and head, possibly from the explosion.

The officer repeatedly told the man to put down the weapons, but the suspect refused. Police say the officer was forced to shoot the man.

The suspect was killed. His name has not been released.

Police say the man did not live at the home, but he did know the residents. Police are now interviewing those people, who were at home at the time of the shooting.

Police also plan to search the garage as soon as they receive a search warrant.

The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on routine leave. He has not been identified.
