Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel announced Tuesday that donations have helped increase the reward being offered to catch the person who threw a German Shepherd named Rookie off an Oklahoma City bridge.

Rookie was critically injured December 6 after being thrown off the S.E. 59th Street bridge onto Interstate 40. The dog required surgery and is now recovering.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Jennifer Fisher found Rookie and took him to a veterinarian. She and her family were so moved by the dog's strength and courage, they decided to adopt him.

Sheriff Whetsel said throwing Rookie off the bridge was "unconscionable and the sign of an inherently evil person." The possible suspect could be charged with animal cruelty.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Barry and Becky Switzer have added another $1,000 to that reward, and Max Fairchild and the AutoMax Dealership have committed another $1,500, bringing the reward total to at least $7,500.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office at (405) 869-2501.
