OKC Teen Accused Of Killing Elderly Couple Found Guilty

The jury has returned with a guilty verdict in the murder trial of Oklahoma City teenager Tristan Owen.

The jury deliberated for eight hours before coming to the guilty verdict on two counts of manslaughter and one count of arson. They have recommended four years on each count of manslaughter and 10 years for the arson charge.

The judge will decide whether or not the teen will serve the sentences concurrently or consecutively. Sentencing has been scheduled on June 14, 2013.

The 17 year old is accused of arson and murder in the deaths of an elderly couple who died in a house fire back in July 2011.

Boyd and Doris Haynes were set to move into a nursing home on July 13, 2011, but they died that same day. The state medical examiner determined they died of smoke inhalation when their southwest Oklahoma City home caught fire.

According to court records Owen, who was 15 at the time, admits to setting his pajamas on fire and making and throwing Molotov cocktails; but he denies setting fire to the Haynes' home.

A jury of 10 women and two men will decide if the teen is guilty or not guilty to the charges of two counts of first-degree murder and arson.

The jury has been deliberating for about five hours, and sat through a week worth of testimony. The jury has said they are having difficulty on coming to an agreement on count 3, the charge or arson.

If convicted of murder, Owen could be sentenced to life in prison. If convicted of arson, he would be sentenced based on the guidelines set for a juvenile offender.
