Oklahoma's Oldest School To Open New Outdoor Classroom

At 95 years old, Tulsa's Lee Elementary is Oklahoma's oldest school, and still open. Lee hosted an open house to preview a new project that will give students a hands-on learning experience.

Lee's choir entertained guests at the big open house, and they've got something to sing about. The Lee Elementary school foundation is planning an outdoor classroom.

Sarah Dougherty with Lee Elementary, said, "A way for everyone to incorporate everything that we do in the building and take it outside."

There will be more learning opportunities for the students from pre-K on up. There will be a small pond, trees and trails and a prairie classroom too.

It'll be a long narrow half acre on the West end of the playground. They're very excited about everything happening at Lee, they even took visitors on tours of the school.

I tagged along with Kathie Miller and Nieta Pinkerton, who has offered a very generous matching grant in honor of her late husband, to jumpstart the project.

Along the way we meet Reverend Connie Ichord from First Methodist; she went to school at Lee in the 50's.

Lots of exciting new things are happening in Oklahoma's oldest school, and if everything goes well with the fundraising, the new outdoor classroom will give them something else to sing about.

They hope to get the outdoor classroom built by fall.
