TPS Teachers Prepare For First Day Of School

Just because Tulsa Public Schools students are not back in class yet, doesn't mean there isn't a lot happening.

McLain High School for Science and Technology is having its 10th annual North Tulsa Back To School Extravaganza.

It’s quite the event, and it's loaded with information for parents, students, and the community about providing a quality education for students at McLain and at all the schools that feed into McLain.

It wasn't the only place, at Bell Elementary a gathering of super heroes were getting ready for the first day of school. They are part of several hundred teachers and administrators at Bell Elementary getting ready for school to start.

"I can't wait. I got up at 4:00 this morning,” said Lindburge Elementary kindergarten teacher, Amber Trochez.

She and many others were working on classroom management tools, Thursday; and across the hall, another group was working on a couple of tools to help monitor student progress.

"We want to have a common language,” said Kettisha Jones.

Jones is one of the Districts Instruction Leadership Directors; she coordinates with the principals at 11 of Tulsa's elementary schools.

The theme was super heroes, that explained all the capes and masks, but the work was serious. They put together each teacher's version of that common language Jones was talking about.

Leslie Parr with Mitchell Elementary, said, "Our personality can still come out but we are doing a district wide procedure."

The teachers at Bell were making sure they had the tools they needed to get their kids off on the right foot, which is exactly what is happening at McLain, where the extravaganza continues until 7:00.
